Then here are some questions to discuss:
This is the first of the 10 commandments. Read Exodus 20:3. Why do you think God put this commandment above all others?
Since we no longer live under law, but under grace, do these commandments, and this one in particular, still apply to us today? Explain your opinion.
This command was given in a context where the people were worshipping statuettes. What would idolatry be today?
At the time, other peoples worshiped statues, and they even sacrificed children to their gods. This command was not only for the glory of God, but also to protect the weak. Did you realize that your personal relationship with God can influence others? Because sometimes we believe that if we skip our prayer time one morning, we are the only losers. But no! Tell us about a time when you made a difference in someone’s life because you “forced” yourself to put God first in your day by taking time with God that morning.
Read Matthew 6:24. Jesus says that the love of money is a form of idolatry. How do you think the love of money compares to idolatry?
For a Christian Single, what could be considered idolatry?
Read 1 Corinthians 6:9-10. In this verse it says that if we are idolaters, we cannot inherit the Kingdom of God. Why do you think idolatry separates us from the blessings of God?
How do we know if we have fallen into idolatry in an area?
Read 1 John 2:1. Thank you Lord for the forgiveness that comes from our repentance. What are you going to do now to stay away from idolatry?
Some prayer points to conclude:
Start by asking forgiveness from God for any idolatry in your life.
Declare God’s priority in all areas of your life.
