The Psalms for Singles

The entire Bible was written for Christian singles, but some gems in the Psalms are truly encouraging for those living alone.

The Passion374 ministry was founded on several key verses, including, of course, Psalm 37:4, from which the ministry takes its name! Another passage that lays the foundation for this ministry is Psalm 68:5-6: “God is in his holy Temple. He is a father to orphans, and he defends the widows. God gives the lonely a home. He leads prisoners out with joy, but those who turn against God will live in a dry land” (NCV). Just as God has always cared for those who are alone. Like orphans and widows, God has a special concern for single people today. Orphans needed a father, and that’s what God gave them. Widows needed an advocate, and that’s what God gave them. Everything that Christian singles need, we find our answer in God.

Sometimes, we are so busy with our daily lives or so preoccupied with the immediate challenges that we forget to see God’s hand at work in our lives. But He is there, especially for single people, whom He loves with a passionate love. He knows well the storms that single people must weather, and He promises to be with them every step of the way. What storms? Psalm 25:16-22 (NCV) describes some of them.

Anxieties, worries (v. 17)
As single people, we cannot unload our fears onto our partners. But we can (and should!) unload them onto God, as 1 Peter 5:7 says. We shouldn’t try to convince ourselves not to be afraid; it’s about letting the Holy Spirit into our situation to regain our courage.

Misery and suffering (v. 18)
God isn’t only concerned with major miracles, but with all the worries of the week. When we have no one to help us in our troubles, we know we can count on God. He is just waiting for our invitation to enter our lives and give us victory (Revelation 3:20).

Sin (v. 18)
When we deviate from God’s plan, the consequences for our lives are as devastating as an illness. Sin is a form of bondage, and we need repentance to be set free. But God does more than forgive us; He guides us to remain free from sin. When we have no one to advise us, we know that the Word of God is there to answer all our questions.

Injustices (v. 19)
Because they face all their challenges alone, single people may feel like they have many enemies. But this feeling is not the reality in Christ. Because with God, we can overcome all obstacles, as David said before Goliath (1 Samuel 17:45).

Insults (v. 19)
Being single can sometimes attract negative comments from those around us, including judgments and criticisms. Even if these words aren’t always filled with hatred, they still wound our hearts. But God has recorded in His Word how He sees us, and it is by drawing on Scripture that we can be protected from negative comments and remain steadfast in our identity.

These are some of the storms that single Christians experience, storms in which God wants to be involved. All He asks of us, to walk in victory, is what is written in verse 21 of the same psalm. “My hope is in you, so may goodness and honesty guard me” (LSG). Our responsibility is to walk in goodness and honesty, and to trust in God, expecting His intervention.
